The United States of America (USA) is a country mostly located in North America. It is a federal republic made up of 50 states and the capital district, Washington, D.C. The country includes the 48 connected states, plus Alaska in the northwest and Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean. The U.S. also controls several territories and islands. With over 340 million people, it is the third-largest country in both land area and population.
.The first people arrived in North America at least 15,000 years ago. European colonization began in the 1500s with Spain, followed by Britain in the 1600s. The Thirteen British colonies grew and eventually protested against British rule, leading to the American Revolution. The United States declared independence in 1776 and won the Revolutionary War in 1783. The country expanded westward, but conflicts over slavery led to the Civil War (1861–1865). The Union won, and slavery was abolished.
During the late 1800s, the U.S. rapidly industrialized and became a major world power. It fought in both World Wars and became one of the world’s leading superpowers after World War II. After the Cold War ended in 1991, the U.S. remained the world’s only superpower.
The U.S. government is a federal republic with three branches: legislative, executive, and judicial. It has a two-part Congress (House of Representatives and Senate). The country is highly developed, with a strong economy, advanced technology, and powerful military. The U.S. is also culturally diverse due to immigration and has a major global influence in politics, culture, and business.
