Antioch is the third-largest city in Contra Costa County, California, located in the East Bay area of the San Francisco Bay Region along the Sacramento San Joaquin River Delta. Its population was 115,291 at the 2020 census, and the city has become much more diverse since the 1970s. The city’s history dates back to the mid-1800s. It began as a landing site on the San Joaquin River built by ranch owner John Marsh in 1848, which became known as Marsh’s Landing. In 1849, the Smith brothers founded a nearby town called Smith’s Landing, and in 1851 they renamed it Antioch, inspired by the biblical city. The area grew through farming and later developed industries such as coal mining in the late 1800s. Mining led to the creation of nearby towns like Nortonville and Black Diamond (now Pittsburg). Later, copper and oil exploration also took place, though neither became long-term industries. Antioch was incorporated in 1872, and during the late 1800s it had a significant Chinese community. However, Chinese residents were segregated and faced discrimination, including a ban on walking the streets after sundown. In 1876, the city’s Chinatown was burned down, and for nearly a century, almost no Chinese people lived in Antioch. In modern times, Antioch functions mainly as a bedroom community, with many residents commuting to larger Bay Area cities like Oakland and San Francisco. The city has grown significantly in the last few decades as families move outward due to rising housing costs. In the 21st century, Antioch saw the construction of the Gateway Generating Station, a major natural gas power plant completed in 2009. In 2018, the city opened a BART station, connecting it more directly to the Bay Area transit network. In 2021, the city announced plans to establish a Chinatown historic district to acknowledge and address its past racial discrimination. Geographically, Antioch covers about 29.9 square miles, with a small portion of water, and is located along the San Joaquin River and the Delta.
