Richmond is the capital city of Virginia and one of the state’s largest cities, with a population of 226,610 as of the 2020 census and a metropolitan area of over 1.37 million residents. After years of Union attacks, Richmond was evacuated by Confederate forces in April 1865, leading to widespread fires that destroyed about one quarter of the city. Union troops accepted the city’s surrender shortly before General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House. Following the war, Richmond recovered and developed into an important industrial and commercial center, aided by canals, railroads, and hydropower from the James River. The city became known for innovation, including one of the world’s first successful electric streetcar systems. Neighborhoods such as Jackson Ward emerged as major centers of African American culture and business, earning national recognition as the “Black Wall Street of America.” Today, Richmond’s economy is driven by government, law, finance, and large corporations, including several Fortune 500 companies. The city is also notable for hosting both a U.S. Court of Appeals and a Federal Reserve Bank, highlighting its continued importance in regional and national affairs.
