Oviedo is a city in Seminole County, Florida, with a population of 40,059 as of 2020. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford metropolitan area and has transitioned from a historically rural, agriculture-based community into a rapidly growing suburban city. Once known for its historic buildings, farming roots, and free-roaming chickens downtown, Oviedo has expanded significantly due to its close proximity to the University of Central Florida and the Central Florida Research Park. The area was originally inhabited by the Seminole people and Black Seminoles before post–Civil War settlers established permanent communities in the late 1800s. Oviedo was named in the 1870s after the Spanish city of Oviedo and officially incorporated as a town in 1925, later becoming a city in 1967.
